Utilising pre-release material | Business Studies | Edexcel | 2020

Many students looking beyond their A level exams will be planning to celebrate at a live music festival such as Park Life so its interesting to see the entertainment industry being the focus of this years Business studies (Edexcel) pre-release material.

This week we hear from Donna Jestin one of our fantastic Business Studies tutors who discusses the benefits of utilising pre-release material in order to fully prepare for the paper 3 exam.

Donna say’s………..

Anyone who is currently teaching/ studying the Edexcel syllabus will know that the pre-release for the basis for the final exam is the Entertainment industry. Trends in the industry is one of the things that I have asked my students to look at, they don’t need to know the ins and outs of every financial statement provided but a good overview from their wider reading would be useful to support the statements that they make in their exam. This will also help their analysis to become more contextualised, meaning that they can gain the higher level marks.

The bullet points of the pre-release are there as a guide for students, and their paper 3 will focus on these topics for the questions they get asked. One of the bullet points asked students to look at live entertainment content – getting a grasp of the general trends in this market will help students to be able to produce good analysis points in the exam.

Deloitte Global predicts that live broadcast and events will generate $545 billion in direct revenue in 2018, a one percent increase over the previous year. The vast majority ($537 billion, or 98.5 percent) of live revenues are forecast to come from traditional sectors (see below) with the remainder from live streaming and eSports.

Live broadcasting has remained vibrant despite consumers’ ever-improving capability to consume content on demand or, in the case of events, to attend remotely. Even in an age in which the mantra for media is often “what you want, when you want it, where you want it,” the way we want to consume is often “now” because of the thrill and convenience of live delivery. And in many regards, digital has actually made live content more productive and profitable.

One of the things we will look at on the final day of the sessions is the pre-release and how you can use information effectively to answer questions in paper 3. We will look at information such as the diagram above and consider how this can be used.
