The 16-19 Tuition Fund: Your questions answered.

This year to support students in response to the disruption caused by Covid-19 the government has pledged support in the form of the 16-19 Tuition Fund. The aim of the fund is to use tutors to support the most disadvantaged students.

Who is eligible?

In order to be eligible you must be on a 16-19 Study Programme and have not achieved grade 5 or above in at least maths or English by age 16. Priority will be given to students who have not achieved a grade 4.

What is the fund used for?

The fund should be used for small group tuition mainly targeting English and Maths, but other qualifications can be supported if they have been disrupted too, for example applied or A level courses.

The main point being that the funding should be used to provide beyond what is already in place i.e. the current course programme.

I’m eligible how do I access the support?

The funding has to be claimed by the education provider which is usually a school or college. If you believe you are eligible please ask a member of staff where you are studying on how your provider intends to use the tuition fund.

How much tutoring support does the fund provide?

This varies depending upon the provider chosen by the individual school or college. On average it is estimated that for each eligible student the school or college will receive £150 to use on additional tutoring. If engaging in tuition with ourselves you can receive on average 10 x 1hr small group sessions or 4 x 1 hour 1-1 sessions with a qualified and experienced A level teacher.

I am a school or college, I would like to support my students with the fund but how do I find qualified tutors to work with my students?

Unlike the NTP, where you can only use certain providers, the 16-19 Tuition Fund gives education providers the autonomy to decide on who to use for tuition purposes. We would recommend using providers who have experience in delivering to post 16 students and also tuition companies who are part of the Tutors Association.

I’m not eligible for the tuition fund but I still need extra support. Where can I start?

We know that the disruption caused has affected nearly all students, which is why our tutors are helping education providers and students all over the UK to address the gaps in learning caused by school and colleges closures.

  • Firstly start by considering why you need support. Is it due to the fact you are behind in your course, have you received poor results, do you need a particular grade for university?

  • Next consider your budget. Different providers set different budgets and this will usually depend upon if the tuition is online or face to face and how qualified the tutor is. Companies using undergraduates to tutor will be significantly cheaper.

  • Lastly think about the type of tuition your will enjoy and get the most out of.

    • One to one tuition is a perfect solution if there are specific challenges your are facing and you need tailored support.

    • Small group classes are a great way to work with likeminded peers, you can interact and bounce ideas between each other. Its also a great way to get a sound understanding across the syllabus.

    • Lastly if you are in need of a grade boost just before the examination period intensive revision courses are perfect as they cover the entire course including exam technique in a matter of days!

Regardless if you qualify for the government support or not there will always be tuition options available for a range of budgets. If you would like further information on any of the above please get in touch.

“I cant believe how much we have covered in just 3 days! Really good way of revising everything again and then practicing the skills.”
